What makes a cave a cave? Why are Phantom Pot and Ora Cave, both caves in the Ora river cave system, two different caves instead of one? If you take a look at the illustration of the cave system on pages 100-101 of the September 2006 issue, you'll notice an "unexplored sump" between the two caves. In caving parlance, it is generally accepted that two caves can be classified as one only if a person has been able to explore the connecting sumps. Oftentimes, conditions are such that a caver cannot make it through a sump. On this expedition, the cave upstream from the connecting unexplored sump was reached via another entrance, a "pot" or pothole, earning the cave the name Phantom Pot.
