Greater Loss Photograph by Vincent J. Musi
Doctors amputated seven of Messner's frostbitten toes soon after he returned from the Himalayan summit of Nanga Parbat in 1970. But the expedition left a deeper scar: His brother Günther died on the descent. After the loss, Messner became more professional in his approach to climbing. "I knew exactly that my life was limited, and I have to do it," he said. "It is the key moment of my life."
