Born and raised in the German-speaking Dolomite region of northern Italy, young Reinhold, far right, sits for a family portrait. By the time he turned ten, Reinhold was climbing notable peaks in the local Geislerspitzen range. With him in the photo are, from far left, upper row, eldest brother Helmut, "Seffe" the maid, brother Erich, mother Maria holding baby brother Siegfried, and seated in front, sister Waltraud and brother Günther.
