Evolution Blooms Photograph by Rosamond Purcell
Pressed Vireya rhododendron blossoms, like all flowers, are the product of a remarkable transition in plant evolution, from pine-like, flowerless gymnosperms to an exquisite array of flowering plants. Genetic studies have shown that ancient genes, also found in gymnosperms, map out a flower's complex form before the blossom emerges. Evolutionary changes in those genes—and mutations in duplicates of those genes—led to an explosion of flower diversity.
