Iraq War Medicine
DECEMBER 2006

Homeward Bound Photograph by James Nachtwey
Amid the smell of fuel and the whine of engines at Balad Air Base, a patient embarks on one more stretch of his journey: a flight aboard one of the C-17s that ferry the injured from Iraq to Germany. There, they are treated at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center before being returned to the U.S. where they can recover closer to family. The journey home can take as little as 36 hours.
