Iraq War Medicine
DECEMBER 2006
|
Incoming Photograph by James Nachtwey
Bracing against hot rotor wash and cutting sand, medical personnel prepare to unload wounded from a Marine helicopter at an Air Force hospital in Balad, central Iraq. Military hospitals in Iraq are not equipped for the kind of long-term care seriously wounded service members require, so many are stabilized and then flown from Balad to Germany. From there, they are shipped to hospitals in the U.S. to recover closer to their families.
