Legacy of War Photograph by James Nachtwey
Though Staff Sgt. Jason Welsh survived the roadside bomb that blasted his Humvee and killed three fellow soldiers, he suffers from traumatic brain injury, called TBI. Dr. George Zitnay, a neuropsychologist who founded Walter Reed's Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, says as the IED is the signature weapon of this war, the TBI has become its legacy. Many experts—including Dr. Zitnay—have pressed the Department of Defense to screen returning veterans for brain injuries. The department has only recently begun limited screening.
