Ivory-billed Woodpecker
DECEMBER 2006
|
Double Take Photograph by Joel Sartore
Recently reported ivorybill sightings, many experts say, may be cases of mistaken identity. The pileated woodpecker, shown here, is only slightly smaller than the ivorybill, and the differences between them are subtle to all but an expert. The black-and-white patterns on their wings give them away but are difficult to spot: The pileated woodpecker has a black trailing edge on its underwing, whereas the ivorybill has a white trailing edge.
