The ivorybill thrived in bottomland forests of the U.S. South, but by World War II only pockets were uncut. Dozens of unconfirmed reports have followed the final verified U.S. sighting, in 1944. In Cuba the bird is thought to have persisted long after a confirmed sighting in 1956.
