Ivory-billed Woodpecker
DECEMBER 2006
|
"The ivorybill has caught the imagination for generations," says Nancy Tanner, wife of the late ornithologist James Tanner and who also sighted the ivory-billed woodpecker in the 1940s. "It's the icon of the primeval forest that we used to have. It represents something we wish we still had." Such a wish has inspired birdwatchers like Alabama's Bobby Harrison, who believes he has seen the Lord God Bird—long thought by skeptics to be extinct—many times since.
