Rufous-tailed Hummingbird Photograph by Luis A. Mazariegos
At once minuscule and mighty, hummingbirds, such as this male about to take flight in Colombia, keep bird lovers purring with delight. Wing feathers that taper to a fine gauze appear delicate, yet they can endure the stress of 60 beats a second. The smallest hummingbirds can hit a hundred flaps a second in brief bursts, powered by a heart that exceeds a thousand thumps a minute.
