Who Kept the Keys? Photograph by Arne Hodalič
Iron keys have been found in remote sections of the river. Like many of the objects discovered in the river—swords, helmets, coins, luxury tableware—keys were highly prized. They may have been tossed in the water as gifts to the gods during a ritual or tokens of thanksgiving. "People threw their most valuable possessions in the river," says archaeologist Andrej Gaspari, who has devoted the better part of his ten-year career to saving the riches of this river. "It was like throwing your Mercedes in the water."
