Global Fisheries Crisis
APRIL 2007
|
Managing Scarcity Photograph by Randy Olson
Caught on a longline trailing hundreds of hooks, an Atlantic cod is hauled aboard by an Icelandic fisherman. Iceland's cod fishery, which accounts for 40 percent of the value of its fish exports, is well managed and closely regulated. In the northwestern Atlantic, however, overexploitation brought the New England and Newfoundland cod fisheries to the point of collapse in the 1970s.
