Jamestown Gallery Photo Want of a Horse
Photograph by Robert Clark, artifact courtesy APVA Preservation Virginia

All that remains of a gentleman's steed brought to Virginia by the settlers is a bit. When the English first arrived, they found they could gallop their horses through the forest surrounding Jamestown, so open were the woods because of the Indians' regular burning of undergrowth. But the rides were short-lived; during the 1609-1610 Starving Time, the colonists were forced to eat their own horses.
