Animal remains from a 1611-16 well illustrate the English diet at Jamestown during the best of times. The settlers survived on (clockwise from upper left): box turtles, sturgeon, ducks and other fowl, salted beef shipped from England, the occasional rooster, huge oysters, and, every once in a while, goat.
