Mumbai Slum
MAY 2007

Solid Presence Photograph by Jonas Bendiksen
One of the largest of the dozen or so mosques in Dharavi, Moinia Masjid casts an aura of permanence amid ramshackle structures. The mosque sits in the slum's industrial district, a place of countless metal-sided workshops. In the shadows, a resident prepares to climb to his home, which sits atop a municipal water pipe. Despite the shabby living spaces, many families have roots that started two or three generations ago.
