A Global Battle
|
Pushed out of temperate zones like southern Europe half a century ago by DDT spraying and draining of wetlands, malaria remains entrenched in the humid, lowland tropics of South America, Africa, and Asia. A less dangerous strain—vivax—occurs in South America and Asia. The deadliest form—falciparum—sickens people in all three places. Sub-Saharan Africa suffers 90 percent of all malaria deaths.
