Downy Softness

Maria Stenzel’s shots—like this one of an emperor penguin chic—on Cape Crozier in Antarctica were part of an assignment that gave travel new meaning. “You can’t buy a ticket to fly from one side of Antarctica to the other,” says Stenzel, who stayed there for three months. “So I flew home to Washington, D.C., for a week, washed my clothes, then flew back to South America to take a boat to the Antarctic Peninsula.”
