ELIGIBILITY

NO PURCHASE OR ONLINE ENTRY IS NECESSARY. A PURCHASE OR ONLINE ENTRY DOES NOT INCREASE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. This Sweepstakes is open only to legal residents of the United States and Canada (except Quebec) who are at least 18 years old at the time of entry. Entrants from Canada selected as potential winners will be required to correctly answer a question or questions testing the entrant’s mathematical skill. Entries are limited to individuals only; commercial enterprises and business entities are not eligible. Employees or contractors of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY (“NGS”), its affiliates, subsidiaries, agents, and parents, and their immediate families or persons living in the same household of such individuals, are ineligible. SWEEPSTAKES IS VOID IN PUERTO RICO, THE PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, CANADA, AND WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW and is subject to federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

SCHEDULE

The sweepstakes begins at NOON eastern standard time (EST) on OCTOBER 16, 2002, and ends at NOON EST on FEBRUARY 1, 2003. Online entries must be received by NOON EST, FEBRUARY 1, 2003. Mail-in entries must be postmarked by FEBRUARY 1, 2003, and received by FEBRUARY 8, 2003 (one week later).

HOW TO ENTER

You can enter online or by mail. Online entries and mail entries will receive equal treatment. There is a limit of one (1) entry per person, household, or e-mail address, regardless of how the entry is made. Subsequent entries will be automatically disqualified.

To enter online, go to nationalgeographic.com/ngm/bestwildlife, click the "REGISTER TO WIN A PRINT" link, and follow the instructions. To enter by mail, on a three-by-five-inch card print your first and last name, complete address, city, state, zip code, country, daytime telephone number, date of birth, and e-mail address (if available), gender, annual household income (optional), and level of education (optional). Please let us know if you would like to receive e-mail updates from us concerning news, product information, and special offers. Put the card in an envelope, affix first-class postage, and send it to SPONSOR:

You must completely fill out the online entry form or include all the requested information on mail-in entries in order to be entered into the random drawing to win a signed photographic print. All entries become the property of the Sponsor. They will not be returned or acknowledged. Sponsor is not responsible for lost, late, misdirected, mutilated, incomplete, illegible, or postage-due mail or e-mail, or for any computer-related, online, telephonic, or technical malfunctions that may occur. Entries are void if they are in whole or in part illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error, or obtained through fraud or theft. By entering you agree to be bound by these Official Rules. Online entries will be declared made by the authorized account holder of the e-mail address submitted at the time of entry.

“Authorized account holder” is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an e-mail address by an Internet access provider, online service provider, or other organization (e.g., business, educational institution, etc.) that is responsible for assigning e-mail addresses for the domain associated with the submitted e-mail address.

If the potentially winning entry is an Internet or other computer entry, potential winner may be requested to provide Sponsor with proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with the winning entry.

PRIZES

TEN SIGNED NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS (approximate retail value $150.00 each) will be awarded, one to each winner. Prizes are nontransferable and there will be no substitution or cash equivalent.

WINNING

Ten winners will be selected at random on or about FEBRUARY 14, 2003. The winners will be notified by e-mail or regular mail on or about FEBRUARY 21, 2003. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible online entries and mail-in entries received.

All prize claims are subject to verification and compliance with the Official Rules.

REDEMPTION AND VERIFICATION

To redeem the prize, winner must respond within ten (10) days of prize notification. You can e-mail bestwildlife@ngs.org or write to SPONSOR at the address listed above. Winners will be required to execute and return affidavits of eligibility and liability release forms or the prize will be forfeited.

All prize claims are subject to verification and compliance with the Official Rules.

RIGHT TO CANCEL OR SUSPEND SWEEPSTAKES

If for any reason the sweepstakes, including the online segment of the sweepstakes, is not capable of running as planned due to infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of Sponsor that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this sweepstakes, the Sponsor reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the sweepstakes.

LIMITATION ON LIABILITY

Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to sweepstakes entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. And Sponsor is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any e-mail or mailed-in entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any Web site, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to participants’ or any other persons’ computers related to or resulting from participation or downloading any materials in this sweepstakes.

CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT BY ANY PERSON TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE ANY WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE SWEEPSTAKES IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. SHOULD SUCH AN ATTEMPT BE MADE, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PERSON TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

By participating, participants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE and its parent, partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising agencies, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any liability, claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation and the acceptance, use, misuse, or possession of any prize received in this sweepstakes. Participants also agree (a) to be bound by these official rules; (b) that the decisions of Sponsor are final on all matters relating to the sweepstakes; and (c) if he/she wins, to the use of his/her name and or likeness for advertising and promotional purposes without compensation (except where prohibited by law) and upon request, to provide consent to such use in writing.

All federal, state, and local taxes on prizes are the sole responsibility of the winners. If prize winners decline the prize or are unavailable for prize fulfillment, an alternate winner will be selected at random from all remaining eligible entries.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Sweepstakes is governed by the laws of the United States with venue in Washington, D.C., and all claims must be resolved under District of Columbia law without regard to choice of law rules, first by mediation, and then by arbitration, in the District of Columbia, under the rules of the American Arbitration Association. Sponsor reserves the right to use any and all information related to the sweepstakes, including information on entrants obtained through the sweepstakes, for internal marketing purposes unless prohibited by law.
