A dairy farm years ago, this land is now called Valley Springs—a suburban enclave that’s a small skirmish in a much wider civil war raging in Loudoun County, Virginia. On the western side live rural folks who want to maintain their way of life. On the eastern flank, big employers like America Online fuel unprecedented growth—and the demand for new housing. The problem, says real estate broker Anand Barnes, is “there’s only so much dirt you can build on.”
