Home of the Holy
Photograph by George Steinmetz
|

Before an early morning service a deacon holding a ceremonial umbrella waits for a priest to emerge from his chambers. In Lalibela priests often prepare for Mass in small rooms cut from the trench walls that encircle many of the towns rock-hewn churches. Some priests, as well as monks and hermits, are also buried in these walls, which, because of their proximity to the churches, are considered holy.
