A Banquet to Behold

A Banquet to Behold
Photograph by Karen Kasmauski

Simple meals are normal fare for monks at a Buddhist temple in Silver Spring, Maryland—but celebration of the Cambodian New Year calls for feasting. Members of the temple prepared this banquet to honor the monks and to earn “merit” for themselves. When the monks are finished eating, everyone else gathers round for a festive meal. Such traditions have found fertile ground in the United States, where Buddhism has blossomed.
