Joy in Motion

Joy in Motion
Photograph by Susie Post Rust

Beaming with pleasure after doing flips with his friends, Antheon Petillo of Dangriga romps along a well-worn path that connects his schoolhouse to a palm-lined Caribbean shore. Antheon and his classmates at Sacred Heart Elementary School are being taught Garífuna history and language, part of an effort in Belize to keep this culture alive.

Camera: Nikon N90S
Film Type: Kodachrome 200
Lens: Nikkor 35mm f/2 with Nikon A2 filter
Speed and F-Stop: 1/30 @ f/2
Weather Conditions: Clear
Time of Day: Late in the day — dusk
Lighting Techniques: Available light

Special Equipment or Comments:
The little boy has motion blur because of the slow shutter speed. It was late in the afternoon, and the sun was going down. But the blur gives a sense of movement and play, so I shot at low shutter speeds without worrying about it. I carry a 35mm f/2 with me for situations where the light is really low. Most of my lenses are f/2.8
