Metamorphosis After Midnight
Photograph by Tim Laman
|

The photographer found this katydid in the rain forest of Borneo during one of his night explorations, when a new cast of animals takes over from the day shift. The katydid had just shed its juvenile skin to transform itself into a full adult with wings. It spent several hours in this vulnerable state as it unfolded and dried its wings. Katydids and other insects go through these life cycle stages at night, when they are less vulnerable to birds and other predators.

Special Equipment or Comments:
I knew that some back lighting would best show the delicate and translucent character of the katydid. I found this katydid during a night walk in the rain forest in Borneo. It had just shed its juvenile skin to transform into a full adult with wings. It spent several hours in this vulnerable state as it unfolded and dried its wings. I returned several times during the night to photograph it at different stages.
