Beefy Showman

Beefy Showman
Photograph by O. Louis Mazzatenta

Excavated from the grave site of the first Chinese emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di, a terra-cotta statue may have held a pole used by an acrobat. A troupe of such clay figures has been uncovered—likely entertainers buried to enliven the afterlife of the emperor, who died in 210 B.C.
