Gateway to the World

Gateway to the World
Photograph by Robert Caputo

Ceramics from as far away as China have been unearthed at Jumba la Mtwana, a 13th-century Swahili settlement near Mombasa, Kenya. Now a national monument, the site’s four mosques attest to another import: Arab merchants brought Islam to this coast in the seventh century.

Camera: Nikon 8008
Film Type: Fujichrome Provia 100
Lens: Nikkor 20-35mm f/2.8
Speed and F-Stop: 1 second @ f/4
Weather Conditions: Clear
Time of Day: After sunset
Lighting Techniques: I used a flashlight to paint the subject.

Special Equipment or Comments:
Painting a subject with a flashlight is tricky. I mounted the camera on a tripod, opened the shutter, and ran around with a flashlight. I tried several different exposures to make sure I got it right.
