Miles from home and for years miles from anyone’s gaze, Antarctic bases have been by far the continent’s largest polluter. Behind Argentina’s Marambio Station on Seymore Island, rusting steel drums testify to decades of careless waste disposal. Like other nations’ bases, Marambio has cleaned up its act and no longer litters this gully, though it has not yet cleaned up its old trash.
