The Journey Ahead

John Helle sits with his dogs in Montana high country, looking out over one of his flocks and the mountains they will all soon cross to get to winter pasture. The Border collie Dilly, at far right, herds the sheep. Penny and Nikki, both a Turkish breed called the Akbash, guard against predators such as wolves. Dogs are essential to Helles livelihood. Sheep don’t really respect you until you have a dog, says Helle. For me alone to deal with a single sheep, if one gets separated or lost, would be impossible. But with a dog I can do anything I want.
