Doing Battle With the Desert

Doing Battle With the Desert
Photograph by George Steinmetz

Gridworks of straw checker the surface of the Tengger Desert dramatically slowing sand movement along the railway from Baotou to Lanzhou. Before China’s Institute of Desert Research developed this low-tech, low-cost strategy, windblown sand buried sections of track, resulting in serious accidents. Sometimes extending for hundreds of yards on both sides of the line, the straw barriers give desert-adapted plants time to establish themselves and further stabilize the desert’s shifting dunes.
