As rare as it is to catch a pair of Attwater’s prairie-chickens mating, it is becoming even rarer: Last spring fewer than 50 of the birds remained in the wild. This species of grouse once roamed six million acres of coastal prairie in Texas and Louisiana. Today the Attwater’s is confined to two small reserves about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Houston.
