Ready, Set, Wrestle!

Ready, Set, Wrestle!
Photograph by Robert Caputo

Kilham and Yoda square off for a bout of ritualized wrestling—a form of play Kilham believes helps bears make friends or identify rivals without the risk of actual fighting. In almost a decade of working with bears, he’s never been bitten in anger, and only twice has a “message bite” broken his skin. Turnabout, of course, is only fair. Kilham once bit Squirty when she played too rough. “She was quite indignant,” Kilham says.
