Sacrificing a bit of the manuscript for science, conservator Florence Darbre cuts away a tiny sample of papyrus for Tim Jull of the University of Arizona, at right, who tested its age using carbon-14 dating. Results indicate the papyrus dates to A.D. 280, plus or minus 60 years. Tests of the ink and analysis of the writing pointed to roughly the same date for this copy of the gospel. Experts estimate that the original Greek text of the gospel, of which this is a Coptic translation, was written around A.D. 180.
