A Place Apart

Every night Father Lazarus, a monk at St. Anthony's Monastery in Egypt's Eastern Desert, says his last prayers of the day in the cave where tradition says St. Anthony withdrew around A.D. 300 to focus on God. With that act St. Anthony helped start the practice of desert monasticism, which flourished for centuries. Monks in early monasteries preserved and copied Christian texts, including, perhaps, the surviving Gospel of Judas.
