Traveling from Zhangmu (Nepal-Tibet border) to the Tibetan capital - Lhasa you can see road workers all along the Friendship Highway. The Chinese industrialization has affected Tibet a great deal. But despite the Chinese government attempts to settle Chinese population across the Tibetan Plateau, the Roof of the World still remains a place where only the Tibetans can survive its harsh climate conditions. Indonesia, Java, Volcano Ijen: sulfur miner chocked by toxic fumes

These Indonesian miners,in primitive conditions not seen in most places for more than a century,often wear no protection,carrying up to 100 kilos of sulfur on their shoulders,climbing steep rocky paths and descending the volcano for 3 kilometers,bare foot,twice daily,choking from stinking,toxic fumes.For this shortened, blinding, gagging life in hell,they are paid 6 Euros a day. These conditions destroy their lungs, eyes and other tissues.“We work in hell,” said the miners,“our eyes and lungs burn the whole day, but there’s nothing we can do. Otherwise, we’re scared we’ll have nothing to eat.”

Heavy Lifting

Two men use a bamboo yoke to lift a drum of molasses from the hold of a ship so that it can be carried to the shore at the Mandalay Tourist Jetty in Myanmar. Each drum weighs about 160 kg, nearly 320 pounds. In the high season, from October to April, about five to 10 boats come in each day, each holding several hundred metal drums. The men, who work from 8 a.m. until sunset, earn $18 to $20 a day for their labor.

A young monk in training walks through the sleeping quarters at the Kalaywa Tawyakyaung Scriptural Learning Centre and Monastic Education School in Yangon, Myanmar. The boys' living space is quite spartan. They sleep on thin sleeping mats that get rolled up and put away during the day. Each boy has a trunk with his belongings, and sheets hang on ropes to divide sleeping areas.
