Simple Joy

This boy is a recipient of aid from one of the poorest family in Bacoload Philippines. 180 degrees from where the photo was taken is one of the largest slum area by the sea, the beach is littered with garbage. But the boy finds joy in simple things, no video games, no stuffed animals, just hanging from the boat at sunset.

Ardith Weyiouanna, wife to original cookbook contributor Johnnie Weyiouanna, invited us into her home to enjoy a meal of sourdough hotcakes and salted herring. "They're called hotcakes, not pancakes," she said. "Pancakes are what come from a box!" Ardith prepares hotcakes everyday from the same recipe her mother used. "I know that they probably came from the White Man," she said, serving us our stacks. "But they've been in my family for generations now." Her husband laughed, "Many times those hotcakes were what got us through the long days."

Natural Protection

While in Kayamandi walking along the streets I came upon a group of women who all had shovels as they had been digging and cleaning an area. I noticed the women had painted faces. I came to learn this was a natural sun screen they create to protect skin. It's amazing to see people living in horrible conditions however they where laughing, and seemed full of joy.
