Durga puja is an annual Hindu festival in West Bengal that celebrates worship of the Hindu goddess Durga. The entire process of creation of the idols from the collection of clay to the ornamentation is a holy process, supervised by rites and other rituals. An important event is 'Chakkhu Daan', literally donation of the eyes. Starting with Devi Durga, the eyes of the idols are painted on Mahalaya or the first day of the Pujas. This photo was taken at Kumartuli on Mahalaya. The artist was painting the eyes of Goddess Durga and a lady was watching the entire process.
