Lush vegetation resulting from abundant rainfall challenged survival rates for this Red-tailed Hawk family. Though seasoned hunters, ground cover provided too many escape routes for their prey. The third baby succumbed on its 16th day of life, moments before this shot was taken. The female parent is departing the nest after this discovery. The babies were quite distraught her stop was not a food delivery. The remains of the dead baby were fed to the surviving siblings two days later.
