Sentinel of the Wyoming Prairie

I captured this old, broken windmill — which has stood on my family's Wyoming ranch for generations — on a particularly convective summer afternoon in 2011. The head of the windmill faced into a stiff western breeze as a massive line of thunderstorms boiled on the eastern horizon, bound for South Dakota's Black Hills. The sky that day was deep and endless. The entire image struck me in that moment as explosive visual poetry, longing for a past that was still visible but long since out of reach.

Location: Little Buffalo Ranch, near Wright, Wyoming, USA
