On Nov 3rd 2011 thousands of protesters as part of the Occupy movement descended on the Port of Oakland and effectively shut it down to business. I followed the crowd that day documenting one of the biggest protests I have ever seen in the United States. When we reached the port the sun was setting. People had climbed up on a structure that ran over the railway tracks. I looked up and saw this picture. As I composed the shot the man started to wave his flag. The symbolism that presented itself in these moments just added to the feeling of witnessing historic events.
