Gliding Pelican
Category: Nature
Photo and caption by Regina Dingler
A single Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) glides low above the water’s surface. The photograph was taken from the rocky mound in front of Battery Point Lighthouse on a hazy summer day (July 2011). The white head and dark, chestnut-brown neck indicate that this individual is in its adult breeding plumage. Colonial seabirds, including pelicans, commonly nest atop offshore rocks and small islands, such as the one depicted.
Location: Crescent City, Del Norte County, CA
