This photograph was taken the day after the tornado touched down in Joplin, Missouri. The crucifix stands on a hill overlooking the city, and it was one of the first sights I witnessed after listening to radio broadcasts warning of further tornado formations that night. I will never forget the sense of foreboding I felt in the wake of this most devastating of natural acts. Rolleiflex 2.8f, Kodak Portra 400.
