This is a photo I captured of Kadiem de la Croix, at his home. He is lying on a mattress, waiting to be tattooed by his brother, with a ta moko- a traditional Maori tattoo. Tattooing is a vital part of Maori culture, while once almost lost to the consequences of colonization, it is thankfully now enjoying a thriving resurgence. Kadiems brother Cody, is self taught, spending many hours researching Maori designs, tattooing and carvings, as well as using YouTube to teach himself the modern art of needle/gun tattooing. Cody hones his technique by tattooing himself.
