Hail Mary for Ireland

This photo represents the huge shifts that are currently taking place in modern Irish society. As the grip that religion once exerted on the country declined rapidly, economic fortunes had risen sharply during the Celtic Tiger years. The isolated location of the statue at the bottom of row of pier steps, complete with a discarded fast food tray, sums up this scenario. Ironically, with the current severe economic downturn, Ireland needs all the help it can get, including a prayer from the Hail Mary. The country is wrestling with it's past even as it attempts to "progress" and move forward.
