One of the best presents a surfer living in the MidWest could get are waves. Few and far between, often in the coldest temperatures of the year, waves arise on Lake Michigan where brave surfers risk hypothermia all for the perfect ride. Despite the ice covered land and slushy water slowly turning to ice, a lone surfer can't wait to unwrap his gift.

This woman had been walking all day, and was passing through Yirol on her way to a town in the next state. She had tribal scars and wore jewellery made out of car parts. She stopped to have her photo taken in front of a white sheet, and then kept walking.

With a single shot, a Sami reindeer hunter secures food for his family during the long Swedish winter. In "The Fjellman Family," photographer Izabelle Nordfjell caught a moment that's both "real and mysterious at the same time," according to judge Amy Toensing. Noted judge Peter Essick, "In the Sami culture, these events are repeated many times every year, even though they are never quite the same. However, by using a careful composition and skillful timing, the photographer made this one encounter with a Sami hunter memorable." Judge Tim Laman added the picture had all the elements of a true photojournalistic image.

Everyday life in Ethiopia means that from the soft crackle of the fire gently caressing the coffee pot by the side of the road, to the harsh and fierce carrying of the water, a cross stoically bared and assumed mostly by women and children. Every day Ethiopia means blazing sun and heat, it means thirst, roads of rock and dirt and scorched land where peasants and shepherds pluck the day of tomorrow out of destiny’s hands, where the wooden plough is the gold mine, and small herds of goats and sheep, rarely cows, represent the warranty of a “plentiful” life...

"Nobody picked me," says model Tsitsi Chiyangwa, 28, sitting on her bed next to an image taken of her for an advertisement campaign. Though she has modelled in several fashion shows, none of the designers at Zimbabwe Fashion Week selected her, until her agent made a fuss. She did model and the audience burst into spontaneous applause as she took the catwalk. "With time, things will change," she says. Although education is changing things, in southern Africa albinos like Tsitsi continue to suffer from discrimination because of their unnaturally light skin tone.

Manhattan, New York, USA (5/10/2011). Sunset on Hearst Plaza/Barclays Capital Grove at Lincoln Center, the world’s iconic performing arts space, and seeks to capture the poetic dimensions expressed by the continuing syncretism between the imperial city and its passersby, depicting the unknown characters of this metropolis. It places a focus on the ephemeral surroundings that we enjoy and generously share among the lights, shadows, textures and colors of the most influential city in the New World.

Record Italian freediver Linda Paganelli, ascending in front of one of the caves in the Ras Mohammed National Park just south of Sharm el-Sheikh. This cave when viewed from inside revealed the silhouette of lady from the Victorian era. Look closely...she is wearing a wide dress, a hat and has one arm on her hip (the other holding a purse). Ras Mohammad national park is considered to be one of the best dive locations in the world. It is situated at the southern most tip of the Sinai Peninsula, with the Gulf of Suez on the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east.

    Maltese Bus Stop

It was a quiet little town in the middle of Malta. Complete silence, except from the occasional mumble from these old men by a bus stop, the only people around, despite the looming great church just next to them. Within a minute, an oversized open-top tour bus arrived, with people shouting and pointing, camera flashes going off, and a few minutes later, they were gone, the square returning back to its silence, being filled with the murmur of these just these four men.

A swimmer stretches out to avoid the breaking wave at Coogee Beach, Sydney. During the first heat wave of the end of year school holidays, Sydney's Eastern Beaches were packed with students and holiday makers cooling off from the heat of the day. A large south swell was also hitting the area, turning the usually mellow Coogee Beach wash into a thundering shore-break. After spending some time photographing the empty waves, I found myself caught inside as a wave was about to break. Wondering what the swimmers next to me were going through, I decided to turn the camera onto them.
