On R-Day, the first day of basic training for over a thousand new arrivals at West Point, these new cadets study the handbook. A canopy and their Camelbak hydration packs offer at least some protection from the sizzling July heat. Moments from now, these young men and women will report for the first time to "The Cadet in the Red Sash", who will order: "Step up to my line. Not on my line, not over my line, but up to my line."
