Unexpected Color

Known as Black Turban snails (Chlorostoma funebralis)to residents of the Pacific Coast of North America, the common name belies the beautiful colors to be found on their shells when the animals are exposed during low tide. Sadly, the colors erode off the older parts of the shell as the snails age. It is speculated that snails of this species can live up to 100 years. Image captured with a Nikon D80 and Nikor 55-200mm zoom lens with macro extension tubes, ISO 500, f8.0.
Location: Agate Beach County Park, Bolinas, CA, USA
