Cicada Entering It's New Life
Photo and caption by Robbie Shone
Taken late one evening during a heavy rain storm in the Sarawak rainforest, Borneo, captures the final stage of the lengthy cicada (Cicadidae) life cycle. Whilst waiting for its beautiful translucent wings to dry and harden, this newly emerged adult cicada sits upon its hard nymph exoskeleton. Cicadas have the longest life cycle of any insect and spend the majority of their life waiting for this moment, with up to 17 years spent underground in the nymph stage and only a short 5 weeks of adulthood.
