West Papua in Indonesia is home to around 300 tribes, each with it's own language. Several tribes in and around the Baliem Valley at the centre of West Papua, also know as Irian Jaya, are classed as Dani people. This Dani elder, Iyokdagak, proudly posing in front of his traditional circular thatched-roof hut (Honai) once had six wives which were paid for with hundreds of pigs, took eight lives whilst fighting in tribal wars when he was a young warrior and had several joints amputated on his left hand as a mark of respect for family members who had died, a custom which is now prohibited.
