Misty Dawn

The Wahgi Valley in the Eastern Highlands province is a great place to experience an age-old way of life. The people here, whose kindness and generosity seem at odds with the harshness of the unforgiving landscape, are so welcoming and hospitable. A family I visited every day had just finished building their new pig and cassowary hut to live in, which will last approximately 5 years. As the mist rolled through the valley at dawn on my last morning in the area, youngest daughter Gertrude was feeding the pigs as usual before her long, steep walk down the mountain to school.
