Proud Great Egret Mom and Chicks

Category: Nature

Photo and caption by Teresa Long

This photo was taken in St Augustine, FL at the Alligator Farm. Although the alligators are captive, the birds are free. Birds like the great egrets, snowy egrets, spoonbills and others like to nest where there are alligators, because it protects the chicks from small mammals. Occasionally a chick falls and is eaten, but there is in general a greater chance of survival with alligators below the nests.
